DmC: Devil May Cry Definitive Edition – Review

DMC definitive edition

Even though the fifth game of the Devil May Cry franchise hasn’t been the profitable success Capcom hoped for, the Japanese publisher gives this title another chance with its remastered edition for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. In 2013 DmC: Devil May Cry caused conflicted opinions between critics and fans of the popular game series, since the title itself was pretty well rated, while loyal fans of the original characterization criticized its reboot heavily. Now, they can criticize a refined and much prettier version of the original game.

Welcome to Limbo City

DmC: Devil May Cry starts as usual with the main protagonist Dante, who has actually no idea about his true identity. He only knows that he’s neither human nor demon. After meeting a girl called Kat and his brother Vergil, Dante realizes that he is a so-called Nephilim, a child of a demon and an angel, which is the only breed that is capable of killing the demon king Mundus, who is in control of the city’s society. With Dante’s demon and also angel powers, he tries to destroy Mundus’ manipulative corporation, while revenging his angel mother’s death.

The Nephilim twins

The story itself may not sound as original as some might have hoped for, but DmC offers a pretty interesting construct of a diabolically manipulated city, created by a villain that really gives you the creeps. Too bad that other characters didn’t turn out so well. Compared to the strong ladies of the older titles of the Devil May Cry franchise, the human girl Kat looks a little bit boring and totally uncreative. At least the new designed twin brothers seem to be simply amazing, even though you cannot really compare them to the previous Vergil and Dante. So if you have no problem with completely different Devil May Cry protagonists, then you might really fall for those two.

What’s new?

Developer Ninja Theory tried to respond to people’s criticism and gave their best to fix certain parts of the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions. DmC: Devil May Cry Definitive Edition runs on 60 fps with improved 1080p resolution, while it promises a rebalanced gameplay too. Also all the released DLCs, like the different skins for Dante and his weapons, for the previous editions are available, combined with a new costume pack for Dante and Vergil.

Let’s speed things up!

The new DmC: Devil May Cry includes more challenges with different modes like the Gods Must Die, the Must Style and the Hardcore mode. As another feature, Vergil’s Bloody Palace has been added, where you can play as Dante’s twin brother against a tons of demons in the challenging Bloody Palace mode. Another nice function of the Definitive Edition is the Turbo Mode, which increases the game’s speed by 20 percent. Therefore, it’s a lot easier to experience all the different levels of difficulty within a shorter amount of time. If you haven’t had the chance to get your hands on all the downloadable content from the PS3 or Xbox 360 versions, now you can take a look at the old and new features easily.

Worth another chance?

Only two years lie apart between the previous DmC and its new Definitive Edition. So why does Capcom take another risk with a remastered version of a poorly sold game? Well, probably because DmC: Devil May Cry is actually pretty good, and it really deserves recognition, although hardcore-fans of the older games of the franchise may dislike its reboot. Just overlook the fact that there is a new setting and of course a new Dante, and you may experience a game that is so worth playing – if not only for its entertaining gameplay and story, then for its absolutely brilliant soundtrack. With only 40$ you can have everything a good game needs. If you haven’t had the possibility to experience the original one, go ahead and get yourself DmC: Devil May Cry Definitive Edition. You won’t regret it.

What we liked:

  • Smooth 60 fps gameplay
